Born from beloved Pittsburgh theater the Manor, the Fourth Door reimagines the Manor’s fourth auditorium as a space for experimentation and community gathering. This project is a part of the coursework in the Carnegie Mellon School of Design.
Ecosystem
Established in 1922, the Manor Theatre is a beloved neighborhood cinema and the oldest theater in Pittsburgh. Like many neighborhood cinemas, the Manor faces challenges of its small size and resources, especially within an industry that favors multiplexes and streaming.
After onsite research (interviews, user journeys and analysis of touch points), we created a new identity for the Manor that leaned into the constraints facing the theater, building a curated, intimate moviegoing experience that centers community and good film.
Introducing the Fourth Door
The Fourth Door is the Manor’s little sister and reimagines their fourth auditorium as a space for experimentation and community gathering. The concept of the Fourth Door empowers the Manor to take more risks with their film selections and reinforces the Manor as a space for cinephiles and locals alike to gather, converse, and connect over cinema.
Visual Identity
The Fourth Door’s visual identity recalls it’s pillars, is experimention, community, and curation. She embraces the avant garde and embodies time in motion. She welcomes a new age of cinema while respecting the classics, situating herself in the present moment, where the old and new culminate.
The Manor’s renovation erased most traces of its century-old architecture except for a handful of elements which have stood the test of time. We extracted symbolism and objects from these motifs to build an identity which asserts the Fourth Door’s bold and experimental spirit, while still remaining very much a part of the Manor family.
Applications
Our team developed a collection of multimedia assets for the new identity, including a library of motion graphics for the Manor’s environment, along with a collection of print assets, a new ticket and poster series, to advertise the Fourth Door in their highest touch points.
